The Heart of Complexity

Welcome, & Making Sense As We Go

Curt Lindberg & Paul Plsek

  • Paul: "I came across complexity concepts in my work in creativity, when I realized the mind is a self-organizing system. I'd like for us to think of this group as one great mind, that self organizes in learning. Boards are set up in the back of the room, where you can share "ah-hahs" on post-it notes. We will do some organizing, and see what kind of themes emerge."

  • The Theme "The Heart of Complexity" has many meanings
    1. It has a biological meaning (as Ary Goldberger shall explore);
    2. Complexity helps us understand living systems, and provides a new definition of what health is;
    3. Connections between people is the key to creativity and change (another heart of complexity idea is that very complex systems come from very simple rules);
    4. Complexity helps us frame the intuitive wisdom that we have as health care leaders — it helps us better;
    5. The examples that participants provide in their organizations are important. We'll see how small things can make a big difference;
    6. Even more powerful than individuals is groups of people making a difference;
    7. The heart of the matter: How can we use complexity to make important, lasting contributions to our organizations
